Found Kodachrome Movie Film - FINALLY DEVELOPED IN 2025 (RAW FOOTAGE)

Hey everyone. I'm back again and here to share with you something that I didn't think was possible when it comes to my luck, raw home movie footage shot on 16mm Kodachrome film expired long ago that has been finally been developed for viewing. The footage in question is the actual final results that came back from the services that helped me develop this film.


This was originally meant to be used for a project that I had planned but is now cancelled, but seeing as I still had the footage, I didn't want it sitting on my hard drive and for me to be accused of gatekeeping. I wanted to share this rediscovered footage for a special occasion. So, I've decided to release this footage publicly for the world to see on October 18th of this year, A.K.A., Home Movie Day 2025.

Now, the story of how I came across this footage, and just in time, might I add. I was working on a video project where I discuss what happens if you tried to develop footage shot on Kodachrome film stock in modern day. I didn't want to actual record onto Kodachrome film stock, with me not owning a motion picture film camera being one of the reasons why. I instead wanted to try and show what would happen if you shot footage on Kodachrome film stock back in the day before it has expired but didn't process it until around this day in age, long after the film stock has expired and long after the Kodachrome coloring process has been discontinued at the end of 2010. So, I have acquired two cartridges of unprocessed 16mm Kodachrome film and also some rolls of unprocessed 35mm Kodachrome photography film that was exposed and I have sent them off to Film Rescue International to see if they can develop the films and scan and enhance them well enough to get an image. Because Kodachrome color film processing has been discontinued since the end of 2010, if they were able to get an image, it can only be processed in black and white. In the end, they weren't able to get an image from any of the film stock I have sent over with the exception of one, one of the 16mm film cartridges. This one film cartridge was able to be successfully processed and scanned in 2K resolution to get an image, which you're seeing here. Now, of course, since the film has gone way past its expiration date, the quality of the film is not the best. As you can see from watching it, there's a lot of damage, the contrast doesn't seem to look right compared to other black and white film stocks processed before their expiration date. But enough of the image has been recovered to reveal that the footage was shot from what I can tell in someone's backyard, filming some sort of bird, like a robin or some sort. Honestly, I was extremely lucky that I was able to have the images recovered right now. If I have waited a little longer, the images probably would've faded away and would've been lost forever. The fact that I even got an image at all puts me at peace. Seriously, I have to give props to the folks at Film Rescue International for doing an amazing job recovering this footage. I can not thank you all enough.

Unfortunately for me, the video project was cancelled some time after I got the scan back. So now, I have a rare, rediscovered treasure that I'm sitting on with nothing to do. The last thing that I wanted to do was to gatekeep this footage. Then, I thought, "Well, Home Movie Day is coming up. Might be a great opportunity to show it here." So, that's what I did. The footage was revealed publicly for the first time at a Home Movie Day event at the Bexley Public Library in Columbus, Ohio, and it was very nice to be able to show something that could've been lost forever but was saved just in time. I know the footage might not seem much, but to me, if we're talking about home movie footage from back in the day that could be in danger in being lost forever, preservation means everything. I'm honestly proud to have done the right thing and recover this footage before it was too late, and I'm hoping that everyone will like what they see here.
