Описание: The Karni Mata Temple in Rajasthan, is one of the strangest temples in the world. Located in Deshnoke it is right on NH 89 on Bikaner District.

Karni Mata Temple is an unusual holy shrine of India. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Karni, who is regarded as the incarnation of MaaDurga, the goddess of power and victory. In the 14th century, Goddess Karni is said to have lived and performed many miracles during her existence.

The present Deshnoke Town was establishd by her in 1476. This temple was created following her mysterious disappearance from her home.

Karni Mata temple is home to over 20,000 rats, which are treated as sacred. The holy rats are called Kabas. Rats here are fed, protected and worshipped here and they are everywhere in this temple.

According to legend, Laxman, Karni Mata's stepson, drowned in a pond in KapilSarovar in KolayatTehsil while he was attempting to drink from it. Karni Mata implored Yama, the god of death, to revive him. First refusing, Yama eventually relented, permitting Laxman and all of Karni Mata's male children to be reincarnated as rats. Out of all of these rats, there are a few white rats, which are considered to be especially holy. They are believed to be the manifestations of Karni Mata herself and her four sons. Spotting a white rat, is considered as a special,blessing!

The building was completed in its current form in the early 20th century in the late Mughal style by Maharaja Ganga Singh of Bikaner.

In front of the temple is a beautiful marble facade, which has solid silver doors built by Maharaja Ganga Singh. Across the doorway are more silver doors with panels depicting the various legends of the Goddess. The temple was further enhanced by Kundanlal Verma of Hyderabad-based Karni Jewellers in 1999.

Around the vicinty of the temple there were plenty of eating joints offering authentic Rajasthani food. But, we found that the hygienic conditions to be poor here and decided to head back to Bikaner for lunch.

We had traditional thalis from Dwarika Restro right in the heart of Bikaner.
