This tutorial was inspired by a Texturlabs video that showed how to create a collage effect in Photoshop. Unfortunately Gimp doesn't have some of the features used in the Photoshop tutorial, but by using a few workarounds creating the collage effect in Gimp is quite a simple process.

The Texturelabs video page generously links to their free downloadable collage textures to be used as you want in your own projects, and it is these jpegs that are used here. Just follow the link below to grab your own copies. If you'd like to use the same royalty free Unsplash photo used in this tutorial the download link is also below.

The tutorial ahs been divided into two parts. in this section we do some preparatory work, mostly creating a gradient. In Part 2 we use the gradient in the process of creating the collage effect.
