Spineless Marvels, at the San Diego Zoo's insect house, is home to nearly 20 insect species, including leafcutter ants, jumping sticks, hissing cockroaches, and water beetles.
Glass displays allow visitors to observe insects close up in naturalistic settings. One display shows the inside of a busy beehive. In another exhibit, leafcutter ants scurry through glass-fronted tunnels carrying leaves back to their nest. A nearby sign explains that leafcutter ants eat a fungus that grows on the leaves and have a highly-developed society; each ant is specialized to carry out a specific task, such as cutting leaves, fungus tending, removing waste and defending the nest.
Insects come in an amazing range of colors and shapes, and there are several interesting examples at Spineless Marvels. The flamboyant flower beetles live up to their name with vibrant green and white coloration. Jumping sticks and giant stick insects blend delicately into the foliage of their exhibits; their protective coloration is so accurate that it can take a few moments to find them.
Other displays include a scorpion, assassin bugs and a bird-eating spider, which, as it turns out, eats mostly rodents, amphibians and small reptiles. There are also two species of large cockroaches: the hissing cockroach grows up to three inches long, while the giant cave roach grows up to four inches.
