What Makes a Kilt Welsh? Are there Welsh Clans?

The welsh kilt (or ‘cilt’) is a relatively recent tradition. Though it has had its advocates for well over 80 years, kilts for Welshmen, and welsh family tartans were not popularized until about 25 years ago - spearheaded by the Welsh Tartan Centre in Swansea. Today you will find more Welsh men and women wearing welsh tartans than ever before – especially for weddings and the ever-popular Saint David’s Day parades. In fact, there is a tartan just for St. David, now worn regularly by parade participants portraying the national saint of Wales.

Are there Clans in Wales like there are in Scotland?
Not as such - there are no clan societies or clan chiefs…or any of the traditional structures you think of when you think of Scottish families. However, there are now tartans for most of the major welsh family names such as Llewlyn, Evans, Owen, etc.
