A crab here is in the sense of old Russian realia - when plenty of fish can feed a family, but a crab is a funny creature which for Russians participates in funny fables (Однажды лебедь, рак да щука..., etc.) - the creature that moves backwards.
Well, yes, in Russian culture, when it concerns food, where they can catch river crabs, they eat them boiled with beer (men). When boiled, river crabs become beautiful red color.
