Late on the evening of Sunday, January 9, 2022, I noticed an unusually large flare at the BP Whiting Refinery. Typically, large flares like this are indicative of an upset condition within the refinery. From my initial vantage point four miles away in Hammond, Indiana, the flare was illuminating the clouds above it, and leaving a dark black smoke “header” downwind.
Eventually, I ended up filming directly across from the flare stack on Indianapolis Boulevard, where I could feel the heat as well as the low, concussive rumble from the pressure each time the flare re-lit – around 600 feet from my camera position.
Perhaps most striking was the brightness of the flare, which cast an eerie glow on neighborhoods over half a mile away. The flare even caused the street lights along Indianapolis Blvd. to continually cycle on and off, with the photocells that control the lights being fooled into thinking it was day time.
