1. All notes are not created equal

2. Start from the bottom up

3. Gear is great, but not essential
it's not what you have, it's how you use it

4. Open your ear (tuning)
practice 3rds on your instrument (scales)
listen to period recordings, play along
practice “inactive” listening for longer periods of time

5. Keep learning
