WE ALL GATHER FOR THE CAUSE
Denise D'Ascenzo Cooke (January 30, 1958 – December 7, 2019) was an American television news anchorwoman at WFSB-TV in Hartford, Connecticut. She worked there for 33 years (1986–2019), becoming the longest-serving anchor at WFSB-TV. D'Ascenzo was also the longest-serving news anchor at any Connecticut television station.[1]
D'Ascenzo was married to her husband Wayne Cooke (born 1955); they had one daughter, Kathryn.
On December 7, 2019, D'Ascenzo died in her sleep at her Branford, Connecticut, home. She was 61 years old. Her family suspects that the cause of death was
a heart attack.[13]
On January 29, 2020, Connecticut Governor
Ned Lamont announced that he had signed a proclamation declaring Thursday, January 30, 2020, as "Denise D'Ascenzo Day" in the State of Connecticut in recognition of the news anchor’s birthday.[14]
Following her passing, the Denise D'Ascenzo Foundation was formed in 2020 to "support advances in medicine and health, women's and children's issues, and journalism studies."[15]
The Denise D’Ascenzo Foundation will host its fourth annual Walk to Fight Rare Diseases this Saturday at 10:00 a.m. The walk takes place on Quinnipiac University’s Mount Carmel Campus, beginning at the Recreation & Wellness Center. This year’s event is presented by Johnson Brunetti and is expected to draw about 300 participants from across the state.
The walk honors the legacy of Denise D’Ascenzo, the longtime Connecticut news anchor whose sudden passing in 2019 inspired the creation of the Foundation. The event raises awareness of rare diseases while supporting the work of the Foundation and several nonprofit organizations that help individuals and families affected by these conditions.
The two-mile walk will be held rain or shine and will include food and refreshments, family-friendly activities, live music, and special appearances by WFSB-TV 3’s Kara Sundlun and WTNH-TV 8’s Dennis House, who will serve as emcees for the event.
Participants may choose to fundraise for the Denise D’Ascenzo Foundation or support one of eight partner charities dedicated to rare disease research and advocacy, including the Galactosemia Foundation, Hope in Focus, Moyamoya Foundation, National Fragile X Foundation Connecticut Chapter, Peace Love & ACCESSibility, Project Purple, PWS Families United, and the Children’s Tumor Foundation.
See everyone next year - great event for all ages
