In knockout matches, pressure builds mountains… but sometimes one partnership climbs them. The 1st Semi-Final of the T20 World Cup at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, has delivered a classic roller-coaster. South Africa looked shaky… then broken… and finally brilliant. From 48/2 in the Powerplay to 101/5 at the second drinks break, the Proteas seemed trapped in the shadow of that infamous word - “ch**ers.” But cricket loves a twist. A stunning 73-run sixth-wicket partnership between Tristan Stubbs and Marco Jansen flipped the story. South Africa eventually have finished with 169/8 in 20 overs, thanks largely to Jansen’s breathtaking 55 off 30 balls. A competitive score. Semi-final pressure. And Eden Gardens is buzzing!!!
The Launch Phase (1-6 overs)? Calm start or instant chaos? Chaos arrived early. In the second over, Cole McConchie produced a dream spell, dismissing Quinton de Kock (10) and Ryan Rickelton (0) in successive deliveries. South Africa suddenly slipped to 12/2 in 1.5 overs. Knockout nerves were visible. But Dewald Brevis and Aiden Markram tried to stabilize. Markram even survived a huge moment when Rachin Ravindra dropped him on just 3 runs. A massive let-off… but unfortunately for him, it proved temporary. South Africa slowly recovered, adding runs through Brevis’ attacking strokeplay. By the end of six overs, the Proteas reached 48/2. Given the early collapse, they would take it. But New Zealand? They’d happily accept that position in a semi-final.
The Consolidate Phase (7-14 overs)? Did South Africa settle? For a brief period, yes. Brevis began looking dangerous, reaching 34 off 27 balls, while Markram played the anchor role with 18 off 20. The partnership pushed South Africa past 50 in 6.4 overs and toward stability. But then came the spin trap. Rachin Ravindra, brilliant once again with the ball, struck by removing Markram at 55/3. Soon after, drama again. Glenn Phillips dropped David Miller on 3… another lifeline wasted. Ravindra dismissed him soon after in the same over, though. Then came the real wobble - Brevis fell to James Neesham at 77, leaving South Africa suddenly 77/5 in 10.2 overs. The collapse alarm was ringing again.
