At my most dismissive Heartopia is "we have Animal Crossing at home", but if I'm being honest it's "finally i have an excuse to not bother with the animal crossing ever again."
Heartopia keeps those snuggly vibes and cross polenates it with infinity nikki by having a little more exploration and making the paid half of the experience all about the pretty dresses. I gotta have all these fucking cute dresses dude, it's the whole meta.
Heartopia does it's best to solve for how to make a social home builder game without sticking people on gulag islands or abandoned neighborhoods. It instead lobbies both you and your property onto a shared island with whoever's available at the time on one of 12 plot of land that encircles the main town. This means any home you see around corresponds to another player actively using the space. You can wander onto people's properties and do good deeds like weeding their garden for them to improve crop quality, play their instruments and toys or just be a creep like me and sleep in their bed. I'm finding new interactions you can do with players all the time. Ratwife and i held hands yesterday. But mostly I'm just discovering that even in videogames everyone seems to live in a better house than i do.
The first thing ratwife asked me when she saw my home was "why are there three salads on the floor."
"Because my table is taken up with a puzzle board it's an ongoing situation!"
Patreon backers, this floor salad is your exclusive perk this month, I'll leave my friendcode for you and you can come and snuffle it up, you're welcome.
The freedom you have to edit your property is legitimately impressive though.
The naked treadmill of drudgery from animal crossing is traded for half a dozen hyper specific currencies, and a treadmill of daily task drudgery. Monetisation centers on clothing primarily, and some exclusive furniture, otherwise I've not seen any actual gameplay locked behind a paywall. I mean even if someone has splashed real money on a fancy car you can always just grand theft Auto it till they recall it.
There are certain rare materials that have a single rare spawn somewhere on the map each day but i haven't yet hit the point where i haven't got anything left to do. Energy is regained by lying down or eating something so you aren't time gated by that.
You burn energy by resource gathering and engaging in your hobbies which include fishing, birding, dogging (which i think is a sex thing, you'd have to ask Bailey J about it), catting, gardening, and cooking. Pretty much everything seems to earn you money for buying new furniture or party supplies or clothes. Even my cat gave me 3000 dollars as a bribe to keep feeding it. Which i can do for free actually since hobbies that generate resources like fishing generally end up being useful in some other system. I think it's got a decent little optional ecosystem.
pretty much everything is designed to be done with another person, right down to equipment repairs which is a consumable toolbox that has an AOE restoration.
There are scheduled events dotted around the map you can take part in with other players. These are usually on the outer ring of the island that comprises different towns or bioms. Triggering one costs money, but you also get the chance to send an invite out to the rest of the server to join you or any friends online on other servers. Jumping into another friend's instance is as simple as tapping their name and it'll dump you and your house right in.
I've been playing it on PC and on my Samsung Note 20 5g, with decent performance. The PC port is rough though, it definitely feels like an android emulator wrapping the original apk. You have to click and drag the screen to control the view and heaven forbid you start the drag on top of your character in the middle of the screen cause that won't register at all, and hitting the edge of the screen while dragging with your mouse makes it stop as well. It's like they've gone out of their way to give me arm strain.
Aesthetically the game delivers though, they nailed the style so hard there aren't any old people, just kids with bolt on beards.
I've had a surprisingly good time on it apart from the travesty of the PC port. Consider this a recommend as long as you can put up with a certain level of mobile yech.
