The player hunts down and eliminates members of the cult who are scattered across the Greek world. The hunt ultimately leads to the discovery that the cult's original leader, Aspasia, had been secretly helping the Eagle Bearer dismantle it, having become disgusted by the cult's corruption.
The Atlantis Arc: The Eagle Bearer's journey is also a search for their true parentage and connection to the Isu, a precursor civilization. This quest involves finding the mythical city of Atlantis, defeating legendary Greek mythological beasts (revealed to be Isu creations), and meeting their biological father, Pythagoras. At the end of this journey, Pythagoras bestows the Staff of Hermes on the Eagle Bearer, granting them immortality.
The modern-day story
The events in ancient Greece are being relived through the Animus by Layla Hassan, a modern-day Assassin. Her goal is to find the Staff of Hermes and the lost city of Atlantis. Using the information gained from the Eagle Bearer's memories, she eventually discovers Atlantis and meets the now-immortal Eagle Bearer. The Eagle Bearer passes the Staff to Layla, warning her of the need to maintain balance in the world between order and chaos, before finally passing away.
The canonical story and player choice
As a role-playing game, Assassin's Creed Odyssey includes player choices that can lead to different outcomes for the Eagle Bearer and their family. However, in the wider Assassin's Creed lore, the canonical protagonist is Kassandra. The novelization and a later DLC in Assassin's Creed Valhalla confirm her as the one who received the Staff of Hermes and lived for millennia. The in-game explanation for player choice is that a corrupted DNA sample made the Animus's projections less accurate.
