Jungaji - Mission Streets
"Mission Streets is a moment in time for my family. It is very personal that cuts very deep in terms of us losing our beloved Aunty Sherry to the Dreamtime through a concrete cell at the Brisbane Watch House in 2020 and having to deal with the public backlash & bureaucracy in the aftermath of her death. I guess the lesson for us all to learn out of Aunty Sherry’s death is to keep the system & its practices accountable. Since the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody in 1991, there have been over 550 more black coffins that have been lowered into the ground, and it shows no sign of abating. Not forgetting to mention the hundreds and thousands of lives that have been slaughtered since the establishment of the colony post 1778.
Mission Streets is about community standing strong– not just us black fullas but also the broader community in addressing this scourge that continues to marginalise and expose vulnerable people to the injustice of racially systemic bureaucratic systems. This song comes from a pure and truthful place, and I hope that it generates conversations about how we police the police, how we govern the government, in keeping our Australian systems accountable. This song speaks to that, and 3.3% of Australia’s population, who are still the most over-incarcerated people on the face of the planet today.
As a Dhadjowa Foundation board member, an organisation that I’m passionately connected with, other representatives are assisting black people's communities affected by loved ones lost to the system. It is a non-profit family-driven organisation that was born from a place of profound heartache, which is what motivates us all to continue this important work. As a multi–disciplinary creative, I’ve dedicated a lifetime of commitment towards music, visual arts, social justice, and also sharpening my spears in the theatrical world that will further illuminate dialogue & awareness around addressing this scourge that continues to plague our growth & prosperity once and for all."

MISSION STREETS (LYRICS) - Jungaji ©2025
When the night has come to lay them down
Mission streets, they smoking to the ground
Smoking to the ground
City streets on fire, black boy is down
They done left him dead, on concrete ground
(Ooh) In the mission, it is madness
Sadness in the air
Bullyman he swore, an oath to protect
They are polarized, communities on edge
(Ooh) In the mission, Uncle stood his ground
The white law let him down
When the night has come to lay them down
Mission streets, they smoking to the ground
Burning on fire
Black souls they’re on fire
It’s a wildfire
The mission streets gone down, down down down down
Oh that police man bird, captures a time
They are marching strong, a blackfulla has died
(Ooh) In the mission, she had passed away
They fighting hard for days
Nyulu wawunyor, nyulu dungandar whilegundamal
Jirri warra yinye kullingor imbala
Nyulu wawunyor, nyulu dungandar whilegundamal
Jirri warra yinye kullingor imbala
Hanging trees where the leaves fall on coffins
Dressed in black for the souls that were lost when
These tyrants of a system that’s nasty
The oppressed will prevail
They burning on fire
Black souls they’re on fire
It’s a wildfire
The mission streets gone down, down down down down
Burning on fire
Black souls they’re on fire, no
It’s a wildfire
Oooh the mission streets gone down
