Bishop Marcio Meira, a Brazilian Anglican bishop, delivered a Lenten guest sermon on 1 Samuel 16, centered on the theme that God evaluates people by their hearts rather than outward appearance. He opened with a warm, humorous introduction of himself and his family, establishing his background as a church planter from Joao Pessoa, Brazil, who was ordained at 21 and consecrated bishop at 37.
The sermon unfolded in three movements. First, Meira established that God calls us even in times of crisis, drawing from God's command to Samuel to stop mourning Saul and move forward with a new mission. He connected this to his own experience in the early 2000s when he and other Brazilian Anglicans were excommunicated from the Episcopal Church over theological disagreements regarding revisionism and liberal theology. Despite losing their building, diocese, and salary, Meira testified that he never lost his faith.
Second, he explored the passage's central teaching that God sees the heart, not outward appearance, unpacking verse 7's declaration that "the Lord does not look at the things people look at." He challenged the congregation to examine how they judge others and invited them to use the Lenten season for honest self-examination.
Third, Meira shared his deeply personal testimony of childhood abandonment, abuse, drug use, and a suicide attempt at age 15, illustrating how God raises unlikely people for his purposes -- just as he chose David, the overlooked youngest son tending sheep. He closed with a quote from theologian A.W. Tozer: "God is not looking for extraordinary people but ordinary people who are fully available to him," and led the congregation in a prayer of surrender and renewal.
