Jammu/Srinagar: Passengers travelling on the inaugural run of the first direct 20-coach Vande Bharat Express from Jammu to Srinagar witnessed one of India’s most spectacular railway engineering corridors, passing through long tunnels, high viaducts, and the iconic Chenab Bridge.

As the train emerged from a nearly 6-kilometre-long tunnel, it entered the Bakkal Yard area, where the newly developed Bakkal station came into view. Railway officials said the station is a key point on the strategically important Katra-Banihal section of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project.

Bakkal to Chenab Bridge Via Long Viaduct

From Bakkal station onward, the train moved across an extended viaduct leading toward the world-famous Chenab Bridge. Bridge No. 224 and several elevated stretches offered panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayan landscape.

Engineers had to stabilize steep mountain slopes and create approach roads in difficult terrain during construction. Officials said the rail project has become a major lifeline for remote areas by improving connectivity and access.

Crossing the Chenab Bridge

The highlight of the journey came as the Vande Bharat crossed the Chenab Bridge, with the Chenab River flowing deep below. Known historically as the Chandrabhaga River, the Chenab adds dramatic beauty to the valley landscape.

The Chenab Bridge, recognized as the world’s highest railway arch bridge, has been built with advanced safety standards. Railway engineers said the bridge is designed to withstand strong earthquakes, extreme weather conditions, and high-speed winds comparable to cyclonic force.

Officials added that special protective systems have also been incorporated to enhance structural security and durability.

Tunnel Network Beyond the Bridge

Soon after crossing the Chenab section, the train entered another tunnel, reflecting the engineering complexity of the 111-kilometre Katra-Banihal stretch. Much of this section passes through tunnels and bridges due to the rugged Himalayan terrain.

Railway sources said one of the key achievements on this route was the early installation of ballastless track technology, ensuring smoother, faster, and safer train operations.

New Era of Kashmir Rail Travel

The direct 20-coach Vande Bharat service between Jammu and Srinagar marks a historic step in connecting the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India through modern rail transport.

Passengers on the inaugural journey described the route as a blend of scenic beauty and engineering excellence, turning the long-awaited rail link into a symbol of progress and national integration.
