Guy Worthey: The Astronomical Unit - A history of its measurement and musings on its relevance
The mean distance from the sun to the earth is conventionally called the astronomical unit, or AU. From the Alexandrian Greeks to various modern Bureaus of Standards, this distance has been refined as a crucial measurement. Today, the AU has been dropped as irrelevant, but for a time, the quest to measure it became the most urgent task in astronomy. Celebrate with me the cleverness of past astronomers, and muse with me about the broader implications of the AU's development.
