Built by Agrippa in 27 B.C., the year his father in law and good friend Augustus became Emperor, and perhaps originally dedicate to the god Mars, this temple came to be known as the "pantheon" or "temple to all the gods". It was then christianized as a Basilica dedicated to all of the martyrs, under the protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary. There is an ancient "Lucan" icon above the main altar.
The renaissance artist Raphael is buried here, as are the last kings and queens of Italy from the Savoia dynasty.
The cupola is the largest in Rome with a diameter slightly over 43 meters (Saint Peter's cupola is about 42 meters in diameter). The height at the center is relatively the same as the diameter at about 43 meters. It has an open center. It is made out of cement and weighs about 5000 tons. Quite an amazing feat of engineering by the ancient Romans!
