1. If someone asked you who Jesus is based only on John 1:1–18, how would you
answer?

2. Read John 1:1-5. According to verses 1–3, what three statements are made
about “the Word” (Logos)? What does John mean when he says, “the Word
was with God” and “the Word was God”? Why are both statements important?
Why do you think John begins his Gospel this way instead of starting with Jesus’
birth?

3. Read John 1:6-8. How is John the Baptist introduced, and what is his role
according to verses 6–8? What does John the Apostle mean when he calls Jesus
the “Light”? Why is John the Baptist not the “Light”? Explain.

4. Read John 1:14. What does verse 14 mean when it says, “The Word became
flesh and dwelt among us”? Why is the incarnation (God becoming flesh)
essential to the Christian faith? What does it mean for you personally that God
chose to dwell among humanity?

5. Read John 1:15-18. How does John contrast Moses and the Law with Jesus
Christ in verses 16–17? How can you reflect the role of John the Baptist,
pointing others to Christ, in your workplace, family, or community? What
practical step can you take this week to live more fully in the grace Christ
offers?
