I know as a menstrual migraine sufferer, the chances are that your treatment involves artificial manipulation of your hormones. Is it helping you?
Hello, I'm Dean Watson of the Watson Headache Clinic and Watson Headache Institute.
You see, since 1991 I have treated headache and migraine exclusively amassing an extraordinary 22,000 hours of experience with over 7,500 headache and migraine sufferers, just like yourself.
So now, here's why artificially manipulating your hormones is not helping you.
We know that the hormonal profiles of women with menstrual migraine are no different from those women without menstrual migraine.
What's problem here ... its not the hormones, so what is the problem.
Here's the clue.
We know that the 'triptans' treat menstrual migraine effectively.
Now you may be familiar with the 'triptans', but if you are not let me explain. The 'triptans' are a family of drugs developed specifically to treat migraine ... now you may know these drugs by other names Imigran, Zomig, Zolmatriptan, Naramig, and Maxalt is a very recent one.
So just how do the 'triptans' treat migraine? They don't change hormonal patterns. What they do they densensitise the brainstem. So it will come as no surprise to you now to learn that the brainstems of menstrual migraine sufferers are sensitised.
So now the question becomes ... what's causing the sensitisation?
One significantly underestimated reason for sensitisation of the brainstem are disorders of the upper neck.
So, how can you tell if your neck is the cause of your migraine?
If your migraine is one sided, but it can be on either side, between episodes or within the same episode, then it is your neck without a doubt.
I want you to think about that for a moment ...
Now, having said that if you migraine is one sided and it is always, always, always on that one side or if it is on both sides at the same time - it doesn't rule out your neck.
However, an assessment using the Watson Headache Approach can identify your neck as the reason for your migraine.
The Watson Headache Approach is the only manual therapy approach that has been shown to desensitise the brainstem; there is no doubt, there is no guesswork about this. I can demonstrate this to you quite clearly.
