i left my beechwood heart by water’s edge,
among the seaside stones and rust-stumped
palms, a knotted mass of eroding timber.
backdrop all daily-dull beauty run ashore —
swath-plots of pebbled sand, grit-cast sun
shards, flattened dunes and arid earth flanked
by breeze and balm and marooned hope
for another tide which may not return.
forget dammed up linings of silvery ores,
forget damp moss and the hallowed ache
of unchannelled affection, love set outside
rock-rimmed basin, the kind which cannot
be contained,
be commanded,
be constricted.
be cultivated.
all it can be
is beheld.
look.
i held
something like this before,
once a forest pillar, a broad-boughed shelter,
a planted thing. it must be laid down,
long-drying specimen of hewn devotion.
i left my deadened beechwood heart
by water’s edge last week. set, offered, walked
away. tomorrow’s flash flood will come sweeping
through bouldered, battered cove. years from now,
some bay-bound lovers in close formation
will slow-swim over coral-covered floors
and find an underwater grove of green.
