5'2", 122 Pounds, Nearly Blind — He Crawled 60 Yards to Save 15 Lives
July 31st, 1943. New Georgia Island. Private First Class Rodger Young lay face down in the kunai grass.
25 years old. 5 feet 2 inches tall. 122 pounds. Nearly blind in his right eye. Nearly deaf in both ears. Shot through the left shoulder four minutes earlier.
Thirty yards ahead, a Japanese machine gun pinned down his entire platoon. Fifteen men couldn't move forward. Couldn't move backward. Could only press their faces into the mud and listen to 7.7mm rounds cutting the air above their heads.
Rodger Young began crawling toward the machine gun.
Alone. Wounded. Half blind. Nearly deaf. Armed with two grenades he could barely see to throw.
He crawled because fifteen men behind him would die if he didn't.
This is the story of the smallest man in Company B. The boy from Tiffin, Ohio who was told he was too small for football—and played four years anyway. The soldier who was promoted to sergeant—then asked to be demoted because he couldn't hear well enough to keep his men safe.
The man who crawled 60 yards through machine gun fire with a shattered shoulder to save fifteen lives.
Rodger Young was always too small for everything. But he never let that stop him.
