Описание: Caro Emerald, real name Caroline Esmeralda van der Leeuw (Amsterdam, April 26, 1981), is a Dutch singer. Her repertoire is mainly English. She achieved great success both in the Netherlands and internationally with, among others, the single A Night Like This and the album Deleted Scenes from the Cutting Room Floor (2010). Since 2022, Van der Leeuw no longer performs as Caro Emerald, but under the new stage name The Jordan. With a Dutch father and a mother with an Aruban background, Van der Leeuw grew up in De Jordaan and graduated in 2005 in jazz singing at the conservatory in Amsterdam. She sang in the Amsterdam close harmony group Les Elles and in the Philharmonic Funk Foundation, a 44-member funk orchestra. She also regularly did background vocals at the Kinderen voor Kinderen song festival. Van der Leeuw took singing lessons from Jim Gilloffo in Amsterdam at secondary school. She herself gave singing lessons at Babette Labeij's singing school. In early 2007, Dutch producer Jan van Wieringen invited Van der Leeuw to record a demo for a song he was producing with producer/songwriter David Schreurs. The song, "Back It Up", was written by Schreurs and Canadian songwriter Vince Degiorgio and was based on a hip-hop beat created by Robin Veldman and Jan van Wieringen. Van der Leeuw's jazzy vocals were considered a "perfect match" for the new song. The demo was pitched to several publishers and labels, but to no avail. The demo did receive a lot of positive feedback online, and in April 2007, Van der Leeuw was given the opportunity to sing the song live on local Amsterdam radio station AT5 under the artist name "Caro". Radio stations also began playing the song spontaneously. Degiorgio, Schreurs, van Wieringen and van der Leeuw realized that their sound had potential and began working on a conceptual studio album with Van der Leeuw as the "starring artist". Writing began in the summer of 2008 with the mix of "Back It Up", jazz from the 30s to the 50s, easy listening, Latin, combined with catchy hip-hop and dance beats as a model. With a sample-based approach, but with live instrumentation, the writing sessions drew on a wide range of influences, including well-known and lesser-known musicians, characters and especially films from the 40s to the 60s. Van der Leeuw's own vocal inspirations included The Andrews Sisters, Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan. The usual method was for Schreurs to lay the musical foundation for songs, after which he would get together with songwriter and lyricist Degiorgio to turn them into full songs. The demos were sung by Degiorgio in the style in which the song was intended. The melodies and lyrics are largely by Degiorgio. Van der Leeuw also co-wrote several songs on the album and van Wieringen co-created the music for "The Other Woman" and "Dr Wanna Do". Schreurs and Degiorgio are credited on the album as "Creative Directors" for their guiding role in the creation of the sound, the look, but also the artwork and the videos surrounding the project. The first single Back It Up was released on July 6, 2009 on Grandmono Records, a private label founded by Schreurs, van Wieringen and van der Leeuw to release their own music. "Back It Up" was immediately picked up and was a 3FM Megahit in week 32. Caro Emerald was named serious talent by 3FM. Back It Up was also the most played Dutch record on 3FM in 2009, for which the Schaal van Rigter was awarded. The first Caro Emerald album 'Deleted Scenes From The Cutting Room Floor' was created in the period April 2008 - January 2010. In November 2008, Degiorgio and Schreurs wrote seven new songs for the album in Toronto. During this writing session they were mainly inspired by films from the 50s, which gave rise to a clear concept for the album. After that Schreurs and van Wieringen went to work in the studio to work out the songs. In order to create their own unique sound they recorded many different layers and organised low budget recording sessions with musician friends from the Netherlands and England. These recordings were then edited and used as samples. DJ Kypski was also approached for scratch effects. By building up the arrangements and productions layer by layer a very coherent sound of their own was created.
