What do students actually need in order to manage emotions, tolerate stress, and navigate relationships successfully?
In this video, Dr. Wellbeing provides a clear overview of the four core modules of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and explains how these skills support emotional regulation and behavioral stability in school settings.
DBT is not a behavior management program.
It is a structured, skills-based framework that teaches students how to:
• Increase awareness before reacting
• Understand and regulate emotional responses
• Tolerate distress without escalating behavior
• Communicate effectively while maintaining self-respect
The 4 Core DBT Modules:
Mindfulness – Building awareness of thoughts, emotions, and urges in the present moment.
Emotion Regulation – Understanding how emotions function and learning how to reduce emotional vulnerability.
Distress Tolerance – Managing crisis situations and intense emotional experiences without making them worse.
Interpersonal Effectiveness – Developing skills for boundaries, assertiveness, and relationship balance.
When these modules are taught proactively in schools, students develop long-term coping, decision-making, and relationship skills that extend beyond the classroom.
This video is part of the DBT IRL series, where we translate DBT STEPS-A and DBT STEPS-E concepts into practical applications for educators and school mental health professionals.
