(4 Sep 2014) French President Francois Hollande told his Ukrainian counterpart on Thursday that France had suspended the selling of a warship to Russia until "the conditions are fulfilled."
Hollande met with Petro Poroshenko at the NATO summit in Wales.
"How could I authorise the delivery of a ship, which can become a warship tomorrow, when there is this ongoing crisis in Ukraine? From the moment the conditions are fulfilled, and it is absolutely possible in October or November, we'll be able to deliver the ships," Holland told Poroshenko.
The French President's statement came after months of pressure on France from allies to suspend the delivery at least until November amid security concerns over Moscow's role in the Ukraine crisis.
The Vladivostok, the first of two Mistral-class helicopter carriers ordered by Russia, was due to be delivered next month as part of a 1.2 (b) billion euro (1.6 (b) billion US dollars) contract, the biggest-ever sale of NATO weaponry to Moscow.
The second ship, named Sevastopol, ironically, after a port in the Russia-annexed Crimean Peninsula, has been slated for delivery next year.
In an announcement on the eve of a NATO summit in Wales, Hollande's office called the fighting in eastern Ukraine "grave" and said Russia's recent actions harmed "the foundations of security in Europe."
Also on Thursday, Hollande held a separate meeting at the NATO summit in Newport with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan, discussing about the Islamic State group.
