Rev. Milton's Indigenous learning time today was about a term that you may have heard: “Status Indian”.
In Canada, there are basically two types of Indigenous people as far as the federal government is concerned: Status Indians and all other Indigenous people. A Status Indian is someone whom the federal government legally recognizes to be entitled to the rights and privileges of being an Indigenous person under the terms of the Indian Act. That piece of legislation came in to being in 1876*. Listen to the video to find out what a Status Indian is entitled to.
