MONSIEUR DE TREVILLE decides to retire from his position as head of the Royal Guard, as he believes that a younger man should take over his difficult task.

WIDIMER tries to apply for the post, claiming the glory for a series of successes, including the capture of BLANCBEC; but the appointment falls to DOGTANIAN. At first, he is reluctant to accept such a high honour, and tries in turn to persuade his three friends to accept the post.

Finally, it is his old enemy RICHELIEU who persuades DOGTANIAN to accept the position, congratulating him on his bravery.

In a big ceremony, the KING names DOGTANIAN as the new head of the Royal Guard. All his friends are there at the ceremony – EXILI, PEDIGREEN HOOD, and even MILADY who has befriended FLEUR.

WIDIMER explodes with jealousy, but the CARDINAL forces him to congratulate DOGTANIAN, even telling WIDIMER that he should look upon DOGTANIAN as a model. Whilst everyone is congratulating DOGTANIAN, a black rose falls at his feet. Everyone looks up and sees a black figure in a mask slipping away.

DOGTANIAN is now completely happy man (dog), surrounded by JULIET, his two children and all his friends.
