STORYLINE:
The Israeli military launched a manhunt for two Palestinian suspects said to have killed a security guard outside a major Israeli settlement on Saturday.
The guard, who was shot Friday night, was found at the checkpoint entrance leading towards Ariel city, in the West Bank, asserted the Israeli army.
According to their information the assailants attacked from inside a car while the guard placed himself in front of their fire to protect his partner.
Ariel Mayor Eli Shaviro branded the assailants as "terrorists."
He stated that the Israeli settlement was part of his "homeland," similar to Tel Aviv, and that the settlers where there to stay.
According to Israeli forces, two purported members of the Hamas militant group were initially arrested but there was no immediate indication that they were involved in the attack.
Hamas, the militant group ruling Gaza, praised the attack but stopped short of claiming responsibility for it.
The fresh attack could further fuel Israeli-Palestinian tensions that have soared in the past two months.
