This is a classic and a favorite amongst us locals. The approach to Hagues Peak is best done from a campsite at Lawn Lake which is 6.2 miles from the Trail Head in Rocky Mtn National Park. Otherwise, it is a butt kicking 18-mile round trip and 5000 ft vertical gain. Climbing Hagues Peak is 9miles RT and over 300 vertical ft. Campground reservations are tough to get, but I called in late the previous day and found out they had a couple campsites available on will-call if you get there early the next morning.
I created my own route circling from the east side bush-whacking up a beautiful tundra slope into an awesome white quartz rock formations on the east ridge. MUCH better than the loose rock nasty route recommended from the NW.
