Blackhead can be one of the biggest health challenges when raising pastured turkeys. In this video, I walk through my plan for mitigating that risk in this year’s flock.
I talk through the three main pieces of the strategy:
• Housing and how I’m managing bird density and conditions
• Supplements and feed additions to support bird health
• Pasture management and site selection
I also discuss a research project I’m participating in through the Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education program, which is helping fund some of the equipment and supplies I’ll be using this season.
Blackhead isn’t something you can completely eliminate in pastured poultry systems, but with good planning and management you can significantly reduce the risk. This video explains how I’m approaching it on our farm this year.
