In Part Two of this series on Grief, Conor Graham talks with Francis Weller, the author of the book The Wild Edge of Sorrow- Rituals of Renewal and the Sacred Work of Grief about ritual work for the 21st Century and Grief Tending, the powerful soul-retrieval practice of healing those parts of ourselves that have been wounded and cast into shadow.
In this excerpt Francis speaks of 'The Parts of Us Which Have Never Known Love' which is the second 'gateway' in the 5 Gates of Grief as described in The Wild Edge of Sorrow.
Through neglect of care, societal norms, or trauma we can push parts of ourselves aside, even hold them with contempt. Doing this, we may cut ourselves off from attributes that could resource us to live our fullest lives, in connection, love and power- our 'shadow' sides of neediness, anger, pain, can be left unacknowledged, while we can also push aside our exuberance, sexuality, joy, creativity or other aspects of ourselves if we received the message that any of these these weren't welcome, normal or acceptable at certain times in our lives.
In order to live well as sensitive and caring adults we all need to learn the skills of welcome back these 'outcasts from the hall of the soul'; Francis Weller has been leading Community Grief Tending rituals since 1997.
