“[Jesus] said to his mother: 'Woman, see! Your son!'” —John 19:26. At the foot of the torture stake, Jesus entrusted His mother Mary to the care of His beloved apostle John. This tender moment highlights the deep bond John shared with Jesus.
John was one of the closest disciples—he accompanied Jesus throughout His ministry, witnessed countless miracles, remained loyal during trials, stood at the cross, saw the resurrected Christ, and watched Christianity grow from a small group until the good news was “preached in all creation under heaven” (Colossians 1:23). Near the end of his long life, John was privileged to contribute to the inspired Scriptures: He wrote the Gospel bearing his name, three encouraging letters (including 3 John, addressed to the faithful Gaius whom he viewed as a beloved spiritual child—3 John 1), and the awe-inspiring Revelation given by Jesus Christ (Revelation 1:1).
