One day after authorities found two people dead in the area of East 162nd Street and Midland Avenue, Cleveland Division of Police Chief Dorothy Todd held a press conference to provide an update on the investigation.
According to Todd, the situation began just after 6 p.m. Monday when officers assigned to the Fifth District responded to the scene “following a call for service for a suspected dead body.”
The caller told police they found what appeared to be a body inside of a suitcase. Upon their arrival, officers 'located a deceased individual that was in a shallow grave inside of a suitcase."
"It's just a terrible, horrific situation," said Todd. “It's traumatic for everyone, and it's traumatic just for those who live in the area to know that this was right there outside their doorstep.”
As they searched the nearby area, Cleveland homicide unit detectives also found a second shallow grave with a suitcase that contained another body inside.
“I noticed the light, and I said, 'What is going on over there?'" said Cheryl Young, who lives nearby. “I saw the police cars and the ambulance. I’m like oh my Goodness, there’s something happening over there.”
The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office has taken custody of the remains "and will conduct further examination to determine the cause and manner of death."
Police revealed that the bodies were of two young females, one suspected to be age 8-13, while the other has an age range of 10-14.
"At this time, there are no clear indicators of the cause of death of the two young females," Todd stated. "We don't know how long the juveniles had been at this location. It was some time, so it's not just something that was recent."
