Lo Venceremos (We Shall Overcome)

Описание: We Shall Overcome is an old protest song. It actually originated with Black slaves in 19th century America and, like so many slave songs, it could be cleverly disguised as a church hymn with themes of redemption and freedom being seen as “heavenly rewards”. Folk singer Pete Seeger again brought it to light in the 1940s and we hear the song again in the 1960s during the American civil rights era.

On August 3, 2019, after a mass shooting at a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas that would ultimately see twenty-three people killed, all of them Hispanic, I thought of translating the lyrics into Spanish, a language taught to me by my mother who was bilingual and with which I was surrounded growing up in West Texas.

I enlisted lifelong friend and musical brother-in-arms Kyle Mathis on guitar and brought in Abel Barrientos on accordion to help me make my musical message.

Most, but not all, of the subjects holding placards, which serve as subtitles in the video, are immigrants and represent not only Latinx immigration to America, but also Asian, Arab, and Anglo.

Finally, muchísimas gracias to the many who helped craft just the exactly perfect translation for the true meaning of the English lyrics into Spanish.

Lo Venceremos es una vieja canción de protesto. Se organizo actualmente con los esclavos negros en America durante el siglo 19 en la era de esclavitud de los Estados Unidos, se podría distinguir como un himno de la iglesia con temas de rendición y libertad como "premios celestiales". El cantante Pete Seeger lo saco a la luz de nuevo en los 1940's y oimos la canción de nuevo en los 1960s durante el tiempo de los derechos civiles.

3 Agosto de 2019, después de un tiroteo masivo en un Wal-Mart en El Paso, Tejas donde se murieron veinte-tres víctimas, todos hispános, yo pensé en traducir las palabras al español, un idioma que mi madre bilingue me enseño y un idioma que me había rodeado y que siempre oía cuando estaba creciéndo en el oeste de Texas.

Yo aliste a un amigo que he conocido toda mi vida, un compadre musical, Kyle Mathis, para tocar la guitarra y mi amigo Abel Barrientos para tocar acordeón para ayudarme con mi mensaje musical.

Muchos, pero no todos, de los sujetos que sostienen letreros, que sirven como subtítulos en el video, son inmigrantes y representan no solo inmigrantes latinos, pero también asiática, arabe, y anglo.

Finalmente, muchísimas gracias a los muchos que ayudaron a crear la traducción perfecta para el verdadero significado de las letras en ingles al español.
