The Alstom X'Trapolis is a commuter rail EMU supplied by Alstom for Metro Trains Melbourne. By contrast, the Alstom Metropolis is used mainly for urban metro operations. While trains do operate within the city through metro-style underground, the network mainly serves suburban towns outside the city center.
Multiple orders were placed by the government for the X'Trapolis 100. While it is capable of operating up to 143km/h the poor state of the city's railways meant that in practice it is limited to 90km/h (does it remind you of Singapore?). Combined with several railway crossings, congested rail traffic and short distances between stations, trains in practice hardly reach the maximum speed.
