What an amazing find while SPEARFISHING St Francis SOUTH AFRICA. I never knew that there was this amazing wreck lying under the ocean of the lighthouse in St Francis.
We had reports that there was some yellowtail around and I got the crew together to go spearfishing St Francis. Turned out that the water was ICE cold at 12C and the fish was long gone.
We tried our best over the 2 days to get any fish but we just could not find any in that cold water but then I came across this amazing wreck.
Cape Recife, British steam cargo vessel 5394 tons.
Wrecked 20 February 1929. She ran aground 300m west of Cape St Francis lighthouse while under command of Capt Bradley in dense fog, while on voyage from Cape Town to Durban. Remains of the wreck are still visible at the site of stranding.
