One of Scotland’s Great Trails, The Forth & Clyde and Union Canal Towpath is 68 miles long and follows the towpaths of two historic canals, the Forth & Clyde and the Union Canal. Which were reconnected for the first time in over 70 years when the Falkirk Wheel was built in 2002.
The Forth & Clyde Canal is 35 miles long and links at it’s westerly end the River Clyde at Bowling to the River Carron at Grangemouth. The canal was completed in 1790 and provided a route for sea-going vessels between the Irish Sea and the North Sea. It closed in 1963 but was reopened in 2001 as part of the Millennium Link.
The Union Canal is 33 miles long and links at it’s westerly end the Forth & Clyde Canal at Falkirk to the Lochrin Basin in Edinburgh. The canal was completed in 1822. The Eastern Terminus of the canal was closed in 1921 with the Western Terminus closing in 1933. It was formally closed in 1965 but reopened in 2001 as part of the Millennium Link, the largest canal restoration in Britain.
Due to the length of this ‘Great Trail’, I have broken my journey into two separate videos.
Part 1, Bowling to Carron Sealock, Day 1 to Day 3 (this video).
This video covers my three day hike along the whole length of the Forth & Clyde Canal from west to east. We start at Bowling to the west of Glasgow, pass the Union Canal at the Falkirk Wheel and finally complete our hike at the River Carron, Grangemouth.
