A top leader of the Cali drugs cartel has been sentenced to 28 years, but for kidnapping, not for narcotics trafficking.
This sentence is the toughest yet for a top Cali cartel leader.
Phanor Arizabaleta, considered number five in the Cali drug cartel, was convicted and sentenced for kidnapping Tuesday.
A regional judge in Cali sentenced Arizabaleta to 28 years in prison.
The drug lord is still awaiting trial on drug-trafficking charges.
Arizabaleta has been in a maximum-security prison in Bogota since he gave himself up in July 1995.
On Tuesday, he was found guilty of ordering the 1992 kidnapping of Harold Barbosa, whose sister owed him 200-thousand U-S dollars.
The sentence is the highest yet for a top Cali cartel leader.
