Ohio Somalis targeted on social media for fraud, others facing fraud cases in court

New claims of fraud in Ohio's publicly funded daycares have prompted legislative action at the statehouse.

Concerns initially arose following investigations into Somali-owned daycares in Minnesota, drawing attention to Columbus, which hosts the second-largest Somali population in the U.S. Since January first of this year, the Ohio Department of Children and Youth received 90 tips regarding fraudulent or suspicious activity inside daycares within the state. In 2025, DCY received a total of 124 tips.

However, claims spreading on social media address more fraud concerns within the Somali community when it comes to other publicly funded programs like Medicaid.

"I have long been disturbed in the benefits community. There's a rule called pay and chase," said Ohio Attorney General David Yost this month when supporting a new bill which would allow him to receive referrals and investigate daycares. "The idea is that we'll pay it out because we want to get the money into the hands of people and then we'll chase the fraud afterward."

AG Yost already oversees the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit out of his office, which currently investigates health care providers that steal and overcharge taxpayer-funded Medicaid. ABC6 Investigates asked Yost how many of these cases have targeted someone from the Somali community. He did not answer the question but advised ABC6 to refer to the reports posted on his website.
