The trains that shaped the moors - Crowle Peatland Railway

The Peatland Railway have, with the help of the dedicated volunteers, lovingly restored four locomotives that would have been used in the peat extraction days which ultimately shaped the moors to how they look today. The Peatland Railway do an excellent job of preserving the history and heritage of the moors and are well worth a visit!

The LIFE EU funded programme for the natural environment has awarded a €1.46 million grant to Natural England, working in partnership with Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust; to help restore the precious lowland raised bog habitat of Thorne Moor SAC (Special Area of Conservation) in South Yorkshire.

Lowland raised bog is one of Western Europe's rarest and most threatened habitats. In Europe, more than half of all pristine peatlands have been lost or damaged. Thone Moor SAC, part of the last remnants of a large wetland that occupied the Humberhead Levels floodplain thousands of years ago, is the largest area of lowland raised bog in England.

The SAC has been historically exploited for peat over many centuries. Its unique biodiversity was most severely threatened by 20th Century mechanised extraction. This ended in 2004 providing an opportunity to conserve the lowland raised bog.
