The video discusses the author's experiences with outboards and tenders over seven years of full-time sailing, highlighting the challenges and lessons learned.
Key points from the video:
Outboard Issues: The author frequently relies on their outboard as their "car" for the sailing lifestyle (0:09, 1:57). They discuss recurring problems with their Yamaha Enduro 15HP outboard, which is only four years old, primarily involving a corroded gasket (0:48-1:11, 8:56-9:26). This issue was previously experienced in Panama before transiting the Panama Canal (1:01:00-1:06:00, 10:33-10:39). The engine eventually showed signs of severe internal damage, including water in the piston and cylinder (12:55-13:10, 15:53-16:09).
Tender Evolution:
First Tender (Europe): A small tender and outboard came with the yacht, which was perfect for European waters, comparable to a small city car for crowded areas (2:31-2:56).
Caribbean Needs: The Caribbean lifestyle, with longer distances and stronger winds/currents, necessitated a bigger and faster tender to carry more people over longer distances (2:59-3:28, 3:37-3:45).
Old Tender's Limitation: The initial tender was of good quality, but its design prevented it from planing, even with larger engines (3:55-4:13).
Outboard Accidents and Replacements:
The author stresses the importance of a functional outboard for safety and convenience (4:45-5:00).
A new Tohatsu 4-stroke outboard was acquired but was severely damaged during a dinghy race in Panama, becoming unusable after a few months (5:17-6:07, 6:35-6:53).
Due to the difficulty of servicing and finding spare parts for Tohatsu in rural areas, the author decided to purchase a new Yamaha 15HP (8:02-8:20). This Yamaha was painted to look like trash and had a Norwegian flag for identification to prevent theft, as Yamahas are frequently stolen (8:38-8:43).
Repair Experiences:
In Panama, the gasket of the Yamaha was replaced, and the engine was serviced (10:33-10:39).
Two years later, in Bali, Indonesia, the same problem recurred. The professional Yamaha dealer in Bali quickly picked up the outboard (11:06-11:40).
Tender Durability (3D Tender): The PVC version of the 3D tender is described as poor quality, leaking after 12 months and delaminating after 20 months (7:18-7:48).
Tender Maintenance in Indonesia: Inflatable tenders are easily damaged in Indonesia due to "rustic" docks and pontoons, requiring frequent repairs like restitching dinghy chaps and patching (13:56-14:12, 14:39-14:47).
Future Considerations: The author concludes that while Yamaha is easy to repair globally (14:51-15:02), a rigid tender would be more durable and cost-effective in the long run than an inflatable one (15:23-15:30).

ABOUT THIS CHANNEL:
I'm a sailor with a YouTube channel and not a YouTuber. Sailing around the world in a Bavaria 55 Cruiser, mostly solo, making videos whenever we have time for it.
Comfortable at sea with 4 decades of sailing experience and hundreds of thousands of miles behind me.
Even though this is season 8 on YouTube, I did not make that many videos in the beginning, and obviously not from my entire sailing life. Before full-time sailing 7 years ago, I sailed several seasons in the Mediterranean, and obviously also in Scandinavia. I had my first sailboat at age 7 and have been sailing and racing ever since. I also have more than 10 years of experience as a captain in search and rescue at sea in Norway.
