Ser Boros rushes into the crowd, sword drawn, only to get swarmed by the crowd and torn limb from limb by the starving smallfolk. Chaos ensues as the Lannisters are swarmed by the peasants, several of the goldcloaks becoming overwhelmed before having their weapons stolen. Armed with their scavenged weapons, the peasants rush toward Joffrey and Ser Meryn. The kingsguard attempts to keep the king from the rioters, but they’re too much for him. Drawing his sword, Joffrey cuts down a pair of peasants before one of them drives a spear through his leg. The king’s screams of pain cut off as the peasants started stabbing him with the pilfered spears and bashing his head in with rocks. Tommen is swept away by the crowd

Tyrion and Cersei stare at the horrific sight of Joffrey’s body being mutilated in front of them. With a wild scream, Cersei tries to rush to her son, but Balon Swann and Mandon Moore hold her back. The queen is weeping uncontrollably as she screams obscenities at them, yelling that she needs to save her son. With a cry of triumph someone in the crowd raises Joffrey’s severed arm to the sounds of cheers right before they display his severed and mangled head. Cersei collapses into a faint at the sight of her son’s disfigured face, allowing Ser Meryn to escort her back to the Red Keep. Sword drawn, Balon Swan charges the crowd, trying to at least save some of the king’s body only to have him dragged off into the mass of people.

Tyrion glances from side to side, then allows Ser Balon and the other kingsguard to escort him and Cersei’s inert form to the Red Keep. After the Hound rescues Sansa, they emerge onto the street to see the crowd parading the body of Joffrey around. Involuntarily, Sansa covers her mouth, then she doubles over and vomits on the ground. Face a mask of impassivity, the Hound pulls her out of sight of the crowd until they pass. The Hound now has a choice, he can take the girl back to the Red Keep, or he could take her back to her family. Seeing the crying girl huddling against him, clearly wanting him to protect her, Sandor makes his choice.

The Hound: Come on, little bird. We’re getting out of here.

Sansa: Wait, wh- where are we going?

The Hound: Riverrun. It’s probably safest for you there. Anywhere’s safer than here, but your family is there at least.

Sansa nods eagerly, not needing to be told twice. The two quickly slip out of the city and ride toward the Riverlands.

After the news of Joffrey’s death reaches Stannis in the Stormlands, he immediately convenes a council of war.

Davos: We have a golden opportunity in our hands. With Tywin in the Riverlands fighting against Robb Stark and chaos in the streets after Joffrey’s death, King’s Landing is ripe for the taking.

Stannis: We’ll have to march quickly to reach the city. And send word to Robb Stark, offer him the chance to return to the fold so long as he keeps Tywin occupied. Once we take the capital, we’ll send troops to catch the Old Lion.

Davos: We should send terms to the Tyrells, if we get their support to take King’s Landing, we’re assured of a victory. We’ll need to make peace anyway and who do they have besides Lord Stark?

Stannis: I would rather eat shoeleather than break bread with the Fat Flower.

Davos: Yes, but if you don’t, the Reach will withdraw their food, and I don’t think you want to have to deal with the same riots that killed Joffrey. Even with the Stormlander troops, it won’t be enough to pacify the whole of Fleabottom, let alone the rest of the city.

Stannis: (grunts) Fine. Go, but they must bend the knee to me.

After a long milk of the poppy induced sleep, Cersei wakes up, instinctively clawing at the air as if she were back in the riots. When she realizes that she’s back in her rooms, Cersei clamps her hands over her mouth to stifle her sobs. When she sees a haggard and exhausted looking Tyrion, she instinctively grabs a mirror from the nightstand and throws it at him. Her aim is off and it splatters against the wall next to him.

Tyrion: You missed.

Cersei: Damn you! Did you recover his body at least?

Tyrion: What body? The city is in chaos, we’ve had to pull everyone back inside the Red Keep including the Gold Cloaks.
