If you're a regular at Boultham Pk you will often hear Andy say parkrun is as much about your head as it is your legs, and that is so true. One of the many reasons I like to volunteer is that on days when it's been a tough week, and it seems like an effort, that knowing you are committed to the volunteer roster means you have to get up and play your park in keeping the parkrun cogs turning. Knowing you are contributing to the event taking place, so that 400+ runners, joggers, walkers (and everything in between) can safely undertake their Saturday morning event is a great feeling. If everyone volunteered 3 times per year that would sustain events - and tourists can still get involved and volunteer too (special mention to Hazel and Bramble).
Over the years we have seen a huge amount of life changing events happening, enough to rival HMD if anyone else listens to that on their daily commute. We have seen weddings/stag/hen dos, we have celebrated pregnant runners/walkers, and welcomed a new baby in the core team. We have also said some sad goodbyes to regular volunteers, Jim Diamond (or Big Jim) and Stephen Rutherford, who sadly passed away early last year. We also said a sad goodbye to Doris Houlden who lived in Boultham Park House. The motivation Doris gave myself, and others, and knowing at age 99 she would be sat at her window cheering us on always made that 3rd lap easier. In fact a lovely fellow runner this morning pointed out Doris' plaque to me, have you spotted it yet.
We have some wonderful regular volunteers that give their time at Lincoln, some are widely known such as the wonderful June on Junes' Bridge, and the lovely Sandra on Sandra's corner, but others like Amy, Tony, DD, Tyler, and we must mention our lovely medal holder Betty. Every month we also welcome Lincoln 5k Your Way. I am of course being deliberately vague on some of their points, in case we need to elaborate next week!
As someone who frequently says parkrun for me is about the dogs, the t-shirts and the running (in that order), I realised on New Years Day, that that wasn't the case. My favourite start of the year is doing parkrun. The joy of celebrating with like minded people, friends old and new, the regulars and first timers coming out to share New Years Day is even better than Christmas. This year I had a migraine (no drink involved, before anyone asks), and missed it knowing, for once, I should do the sensible thing. As I ran through my village later, up hill, with the hood of my running jacket pulling me back like a fluorescent windsock, much as I got some well meaning encouragement from the locals it didn't feel the same as parkrun. I like to run, it's not my forte, but you don't have to be good at something to enjoy it, but it really reminded me parkrun is about the people. The people I know through running are all from parkrun: always seeing Andy in the portaloo queues for the Lincoln 10km; seeing 'Little Jim' with the Lincoln Welly AC flag on the corner at the 10km (but you usually hear him before); the cheers in the crowd on race day when you're flagging (Tom from Yarborough, Alison from Market Rasen), all the great people, who share my love/involvement in running came through this amazing Saturday morning habit.
Even so, event no.499 was damn cold, so a huge thanks to all of the volunteers as always.- Jo.Z
