Broadway in Nashville, Tennessee, evolved from a commercial street into the iconic honky-tonk hub known as the "Honky Tonk Highway," shaping the city’s country music legacy.
Early History . . . . . . . .
Originally named Broad Street, Broadway ran east–west in Nashville, ending at the Cumberland River shipping docks. It was one of the city’s first major roads, and in 1875, the first public high school in Nashville was built along it. By the early 20th century, Broadway became a commercial center with hardware stores, feed stores, and a section called "Auto Row" due to numerous car dealerships and auto shops. During the Great Depression, a new post office, now the Frist Art Museum, was constructed by the Works Progress Administration near Union Station.
Emergence of Honky-Tonks . . . . .
The music scene on Broadway began to flourish in the 1930s when Jimmie Rodgers performed in bars near the river. His success attracted other performers, establishing Lower Broadway (1st to 5th Avenue) as a hub for live country music. Honky-tonks, defined as bars with live music, cold beverages, and a lively atmosphere, became central to the area’s identity.
