Описание:
On September 22, 1957, Sonny Rollins recorded “Tune Up” for his Blue Note classic Newk’s Time at Rudy Van Gelder’s Hackensack studio. Released in 1958, the album captures Rollins in peak form, his tenor saxophone bursting with wit, stamina, and invention over a tight quartet. The set demonstrates his ability to take familiar material—in this case a Miles Davis tune—and transform it into a personal vehicle for exploration.
Personnel:
• Sonny Rollins — tenor saxophone
• Wynton Kelly — piano
• Doug Watkins — bass
• Philly Joe Jones — drums
Historical Note:
The nickname “Newk” came from Rollins’ resemblance to Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher Don Newcombe, and Newk’s Time showcases the saxophonist’s confident individuality at age 27. His version of “Tune Up” brims with rhythmic play and thematic variation, demonstrating the improvisational depth that cemented his place among the most important voices in modern jazz.
