Adam’s Peak, also known as Sri Pada, is one of Sri Lanka’s most sacred and breathtaking mountains, rising 2,243 meters above sea level. Located in the central highlands, this iconic peak is revered by multiple religions for the sacred footprint at its summit. Buddhists believe it to be the footprint of Lord Buddha, Hindus attribute it to Lord Shiva, Christians and Muslims consider it the footprint of Prophet Adam—giving the mountain its English name.
The pilgrimage season runs from December to May, when thousands of devotees climb the mountain at night, guided by lantern-lit paths and chanting prayers. The ascent consists of thousands of steps winding through lush forests, misty hills, and cool mountain air. Reaching the summit before dawn rewards visitors with a spectacular sunrise and the famous “shadow of the peak,” a natural phenomenon where the mountain casts a triangular shadow across the valley below.
Beyond its spiritual importance, Adam’s Peak is a haven for nature lovers, surrounded by rich biodiversity, waterfalls, and scenic landscapes. The climb is both physically challenging and deeply rewarding, making Sri Pada a symbol of faith, perseverance, and natural beauty in Sri Lanka.
