Hey Alexa, what does "Copyright Infringement" mean?

Hey, Alexa, did you violate Amazon's own copyright policies?
In an interesting lawsuit filed in Los Angeles state court, a former Amazon VP claims that she was pressured not to report instances where Amazon violated its own copyright policies in the arms race to be able to train the best LLM.
The five words that she gave for the justification for violating their own copyright policy: "Everyone else is doing it."
The lawsuit still has to work its way through the courts, but I think it is an interesting sign that companies even as large as Amazon are feeling the burden of being able to keep up in this real arms race of 2024.
These LLMs take so much data to be able to effectively train that companies like OpenAI are running out of runway, there's little public domain use content left for them to crawl and train on that they're going to run against an existential wall.
Perhaps they will simply consider litigation and paying for the usage of copyright infringement to be the cost of doing business.
