Structure of Sclerenchyma Tissues:
Primary and Secondary Cell Wall: Sclerenchyma cells have a primary cell wall, followed by a thick, lignified secondary cell wall. This lignification provides rigidity and durability to the cell, making sclerenchyma ideal for structural support.
Nonliving Cells: At maturity, sclerenchyma cells lose their protoplast, becoming nonliving and functioning purely as structural elements.
Types of Sclerenchyma Tissues:
Sclerenchyma Fibres: Long, slender, and tapering cells that provide mechanical support, often found in the hypodermis of stems and leaves. Fibres are commonly used in textiles and ropes.
Sclereids: These cells have varied shapes and are often shorter than fibres. There are different types of sclereids:
Brachysclereids (Stone Cells): Found in hard tissues like nutshells and seed coats.
Macrosclereids: Common in the outer layers of seeds and fruits.
Astrosclereids: Star-shaped cells, often found in leaves, providing extra support.
Function of Sclerenchyma Tissues:
Sclerenchyma tissues give strength, rigidity, and support to mature plant parts, helping plants withstand physical stress. They are especially important in the stems, bark, and vascular tissues of plants, where durability is essential for the plant’s structural integrity.
