Welcome to Drive Tour Episode 46. On this episode, we are taking a look at
Farm-to-Market Road 1764, the only Farm-to-Market road that is a full freeway.
This road is located mostly in Texas City, Texas, offering a direct route to
Texas City from Houston via I-45.
Typically, when a Farm-to-Market road is to be converted to a freeway, the
designation changes to a State Highway. This was the case with Farm-to-Market
Road 149, which today starts in a town called Plantersville in Montgomery
County, just north of Tomball, Texas. It used to start at I-45 on the north
side of Houston. That segment of the road was redesignated State Highway 249
before the Tomball Parkway (then later Tomball Tollway, 249 Tollway, and SH-249
Toll) was built. For FM-1764, that process was skipped for some reason.
This is a six-mile (9.6 km) freeway, so the video is shorter than most. I
slowed it down to 200% runtime (rather than the 250% that was used before or
300% that is currently used) in order to spread the video out more (mostly to
keep the timing of the music.)
Near the end, you'll see a double designation (something I have yet to
encounter), where two separate roads going in different directions have the
same designation. You'll see what I'm talking about near the end of the video.
Here is the exit list...it is short for this round.
00:00 - SH-146 North (intersection)
00:36 - SH-146 South (intersection)
00:40 - Frontage Rd
00:43 - Phillips St
00:55 - SH-3
01:43 - Auburn Rd
02:01 - FM-1764 West / FM-2004 / I-45 South / Century Blvd
02:30 - FM-1764 West / I-45 North
