Das Dutchman Essenhaus has been a successful restaurant for over forty years. During that time its business plan has diversified to include gift shops, an inn and conference center, and a food production facility. It is located in Middlebury Indiana and is a huge tourist attraction for the area.
The history of the Essenhaus is a story of growth, commitment, and genuine hospitality. In 1970, Bob and Sue Miller moved west from Sugarcreek, Ohio to Middlebury, Indiana. After arriving in Middlebury, the Miller’s purchased property on U.S. 20. The property contained a small 24-hour truck stop known as Everett’s Highway Inn. After a week of minor repairs and cleaning, they reopened January 4, 1971, as an Amish-style restaurant complete with Amish and Mennonite cooks and waitstaff.
This is a while village which includes the restaurant, a bakery, and several shops along with the inn and conference center. There is so much to do while on the grounds.
They are known for their baked goods and home cooking from scratch. We highly recommend a visit there if you are in the area!
