Why Are These Cows LAME?: Dairy Farming Reality
At any one time in the UK, it is estimated that 22.1% of dairy cows are lame. (1) That equates to about 419,900 cows suffering from lameness. The cows in this video are all sick, the red tape indicating to the vet the location of the problem. Lame dairy cows may experience: pain and discomfort; disturbed resting, feeding and social patterns; reduced fertility; lowered milk yields; and an increased likelihood of being culled. (1) The majority of lameness cases are due to disease in the hoof, with the hind hooves being most commonly affected. A variety of factors may contribute to the development of hoof lesions, including: breeding, nutrition, housing design, flooring surface, farm tracks/raceways, herd management, stockmanship and concurrent disease. (1) If left untreated, some causes of lameness can become severe and irreversible. (2) 😟
